Marks & Spencer closed due to suspected carbon monoxide leak

A shop and restaurant in Ipswich were closed for most of the day due to a suspected carbon monoxide leak.

The leak, in the basement of the Marks & Spencer store on Westgate Street, is thought to have happened after an electrical fault. Burger King was also closed until the late afternoon. The fire service said the basement of M&S was “unsafe” as high levels of the gas had been recorded following the power failure. Customers hoping to take early advantage of the store’s Black Friday sale were turned away due to the incident, which was reported at about 06:30 GMT.

Watch commander Darren Cooper said: “We believe there could have been an outage under the street, which is pushing the gas into the basement of M&S.” UK Power Networks, which said “three of its customers” had been affected, dug up part of Westgate Street during the afternoon to assess the issue.
